Week 5  (Feb 10 -16, 2014) 

In our last week we will discuss what it means to be a peacebuilder and how we can engage our students in peacebuilding projects.

 

Objectives:

1. To identify the characteristics and actions of peacebuilders.

2. To explore local, national, and international organizations that work for peace.

3. To understand the value of people working together in groups for peace.

 

Activities:

1. Peacebuilder quiz 

2. Organizations working for peace

3. Learning from the past: Interviews with family members

4. Discussion of carrying this content forward

 

 

 

Task 1: Who is a peacebuilder? 

 

a. Take the peacebuilder quiz (Lesson 3.1 of the HS toolkit) Peacebuilder Quiz.pdf . Change the category that says "American" to your country and change the category that says "outside of the US" to "outside of your country" if you are currently living outside of the US. 

 

b. Go to the Google Community here and post your responses to the discussion about the quiz and about what it means to be a peacebuilder. 

 

Task 2: Organizations Working for Peace

 

a. Think about the organizations in your community, country, or region that work for peace (Lesson 3.2, HS toolkit). Many arts organizations, combined with activism (known as artivism), engage young people in peacebuilding. b. Comment here about how you can bring the arts and artivism into your classroom to teach peace while teaching English.

 


 

 

Task 3: Engaging your students in social action

View the conversation with Kristina Berdan about social action in the classroom and share here how you can or do use social action in the classroom. Review Lesson 3.3 in the HS Toolkit for a template you can use with students to create a social action project.
