Week 4 (Feb 3 - Feb 9, 2014)
In week 4 we will explore the processes of negotiation and mediation.
Objectives:
1. To define negotiation and mediation
2. To identify the difference between positions and interests
3. To develop basic negotiation and mediation skills
Activities:
1. Negotiation Toolkit
2. Two-party negotiation role play
3. Mediation role play
Guest Speaker: Kristina Berdan, contributor to the Middle School Peacebuilding Toolkits for Educators. On Sunday, February 9, at 2:00 PM GMT, Kristina will discuss how to bring social action projects into the classroom.
Task 1: Negotiation Toolkit Parts 1 and 2 (Days 1-3; February 3-5)

Task 2: Negotiation Role Play (Days 2-5; February 4-7)
Option 1:
In pairs use Google+ Hangout Video or Chat to role play the mango tree negotiation.
a. Sign up here if you want to participate in the negotiation role play and I will put you in pairs.
b. Read the mange tree scenario here: Mango tree scenario.pdf
c. Once you've been put in a pair and given a role, either Adama or Saga, prepare for the negotiation by reviewing and thinking about the items on the negotiation prep worksheet: Negotiation Prep Worksheet.pdf
d. Arrange a time with your partner to negotiate the scenario.
e. Post the outcome of your negotiation here.
Option 2:
Watch the videos of the two Mango Tree Negotiation Role Plays below (one that goes well and one that does not) and comment here about how they reflect the content of the power point presentations above in Task 1.

Task 3: Mediation Presentation (Days 4-6; February 6-8)

Task 4: Mediation Role Play (Days 4-6; February 6-8)

What's missing from the process, based on the negotiation and mediation power point presentations? Comment here.
